Racial Justice Updates
Here are some of the things that are happening behind the scenes now:
- Our Welcome Team will receive specialized training this fall to help us be more welcoming to people with historically marginalized identities.
- Rev. James is working with a team of lay people to help us as a congregation better address micro-aggressions when they occur. Expect more information about this team this fall.
- We are already planning for our second Kwanza service on Sunday, December 28.
- Rev. Carrie is working with a team of lay people to choose a curriculum to replace the “Living the Pledge to End Racism” curriculum which UUFR used for many years. The team expects to pilot the curriculum in 2026.
- In January and February, children in 3rd and 4th grades will again have the opportunity to participant in “Circle of Beloveds,” a five-session curriculum designed to provide children with an exploration of racial and ethnic identity and racism in light of our faith’s values.
- Dozens of members at UUFR continue to be actively involved in addressing social injustices in our wider community, many of which disproportionately affect people of color. For example, many UUFR members continue to be involved in ONE Wake’s efforts, which are being led by predominantly Black churches in Wake County, to create more affordable housing.
If you’d like more information on any of these efforts or would like to become more involved in any of them, please feel free to contact Rev. James or Rev. Carrie.
