A Place At the Table Film Screening

A Place at The Table Fim Screening

Sunday, July 28th, 11:30 am – 1:30pm, in the Sanctuary following the service. “A Place at the Table,” directed by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush, examines the issue of hunger in America.

As of 2012 when A Place at the Table was produced, about 50 million Americans were food insecure. This was approximately 1 in 6 of the overall population, with the proportion of children facing food insecurity even higher at about 1 in 4.One in every two children receive federal food assistance. According to the USDA, about 44 million people live in food-insecure households as of 2022.

The film sees directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine the issue of hunger in America, largely through the stories of three people suffering from food insecurity:

• Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two children.
• Rosie, a Colorado fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school.
• Tremonica, a Mississippi second-grader whose asthma and health problems are exacerbated by the largely-empty calories her hard-working mother can afford.

The film was nominated for Grand Jury Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. At the 2013 IDA Documentary Awards, the film received the Pare Lorentz Award. Please see the films IMDB page for more information: IMDB.

We will use this film as a springboard for discussion about food insecurity in the U.S., and as a way for attendees to learn more about what the Food Security Ministry is doing to help alleviate hunger in our community. Some light refreshments will be provided. Please sign up here if you would like to attend.
