A Leaky Roof, by Chris Wise

A major crisis erupted during my presidency — the roof over the sanctuary foyer began to leak. I did not have a clue on how to deal with it (nor, apparently, did anyone on the staff). During a coffee hour not long after the roof began leaking a member came up to me and said, quite aggressively I thought, “You’re the President. You need to do something about the roof!”

And he turned and walked away. He got about halfway across the room and stopped, turned around, and came back up to me and said, “Don’t worry about the roof. I know how to fix the problem. I’ll take care of it.”

And that’s what he did. He dove into the files and found the roof warranties; held meetings with contractors, attorneys, and the lead minister. A contract was drawn up for repair, mostly under the warranty. All I had to do was show up for the signing.

Now, that’s what I call a community, a gathering of folks who take care of each other.
