The In-Home Animal Blessing, by Cherry Block
While LoraKim Joyner served as our interim minister, Dan and I admired many qualities, among them her creativity, gentleness, and compassion. An example of her generous nature was her offer to do an animal blessing at our house as our three pets had health issues at the time. LoraKim constructed a beautiful blessing for each based on our descriptions of their personalities. Those words remain in frames with their photos in our hallway.
It was a lovely party with “godparents”, William and Miriam Block and Claire and Dennis Drehmel in attendance. Our dog, Fyedka, remained fairly calm. Our cat, Kara, started to growl after awhile, tired of being held. And then our other cat, Sheba, escaped to the dining room. LoraKim announced “Fyedka and Kara are done. I’m going after Sheba.” It is probably the only animal blessing ever that ended with the minister sitting under the table with the cat. A few minutes later she hopped up and said “They’re all good to go. Time for cake and juice!”
