Food Security Ministry Group

Goal

The goal of the Food Security Ministry Team is to expand food security and help end
hunger in Wake County. Our team partners with area businesses, non-profits and
interfaith organizations to facilitate ongoing efforts for all ages affiliated with UUFR to
participate with agencies that reduce food insecurity through in-kind donations,
awareness, and volunteering opportunities.

We support seven food security projects that have a positive impact on our community. .
Our team meets monthly the first Tuesday of the month. We hope you will join us in the

Projects

Panera Day-End Dough-Nation – Every Monday and Sunday at 8:00 a.m., volunteers pick up baked goods from the Panera Bread on Kildare Farm Road in Cary (across from Wake Med Hospital). They deliver the bakery items and bread to two homeless shelters in Raleigh. The Women’s Center and Raleigh Rescue Mission . Bryant Community Engagement Center– Volunteers donate food to be assembled into snack packs for people living without walls in Raleigh. A weekly supply list is emailed out to volunteers. Food is then collected at the UUFR Action Parking Lot (lower parking lot) every Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. and delivered directly to the engagement center. Interfaith Food Shuttle

Grocery Bags for Seniors – These Grocery bags supplement the fixed income of our older community. Volunteers distribute the bags door-to-door. UUFR volunteers meet at the Interfaith Food Shuttle warehouse every third Thursday of the month. Where they fill 90 bags of groceries and deliver them to senior housing communities. Martin Street Mobile MarketThe mobile market feeds those in need, provides an opportunity for UUFR members to work together, and increases our visibility in the community, as well as bringing us into contact with the people we serve. The Mobile Market operates monthly at Martin Street Baptist Church, Raleigh on the second Saturday of each month. Volunteers pack groceries which are then distributed to clients in waiting cars. Urban Ministries of Wake County

Helen Wright Center Meal Train– UUFR participates in the Helen Wright Center Meal Train every third Monday of the month. Volunteers provide a nutritious homemade dinner and serve the meal up to 72 unsheltered women every month. A monthly sign-up is sent, and volunteers can donate requested grocery items, prepare a side or main dish, and or serve the meal in person. Donated food can be dropped at UUFR cabinets in the lower lobby or the fridge in the new kitchen. Contact Jude Oliveri Burde at or Amy Gilbert to be added to email list.

Urban Ministries Food PantryThe food pantry provides a weeks’ worth of nutritious groceries for more than 30,000 families a year, including about 10,000 children. Food can be left in the downstairs foyer cupboards during office hours and before or after services on Sunday. A list of most needed items is attached to the cupboard doors. All perishable items are accepted. Please no glass. Contact Karen Goldfarb at

CROP Hunger Walk- UUFR co- sponsored all-ages yearly event in downtown Raleigh raising awareness of food security locally and worldwide. The event takes place in October. Participants can choose a one-mile or three-mile route. Twenty-five percent of locally raised funds support local agencies that feed the hungry. The remainder is distributed to Church World Services partnered agencies throughout the world. Fighting hunger one step at a time. Contact Jude Oliveri Burde for more information

Accomplishments

Every month an average of $ 5,000 of Panera bakery items which would otherwise be discarded are delivered to two partnering agencies, The Women’s Center, and Raleigh Rescue Mission.

CROP Hunger Walk, a UUFR co-sponsored event which is an all-age multi-
denominational walk that raised over $1,500 supporting local and global food security projects while promoting awareness.

Awarded Urban Ministries of Wake County Legacy Status for 10+ years of providing
meals to the Helen Wright Center.

Donated over 250 lbs. of nonperishable food items to Urban Ministries Food Pantry
yearly.

Working with Family Ministry we have expanded hands-on social justice opportunities for all-ages involvement.

Recipient of Whole Foods Grassroots Giving grant.

Interfaith partnership with Martin Street Baptist Church, Church World Services and St. John’s Metropolitan Community Church.

Yearly delivery of 1080 grocery bags to low-income seniors living in Raleigh.

Weekly collection for Bryant Community Engagement Center distributes 100 snack
bags to the unsheltered every week.
