ONE Wake

Support ONE Wake’s plan to build 1,000 Affordable Homes and 1000 Affordable Rental Units in Wake County

What is ONE Wake?

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh has belonged to ONE Wake – – a multiracial, multicultural, multifaith community organizing coalition of more than 40 congregations and civic organizations that advocates for the common good in Wake County – – since the coalition’s founding in the fall of 2020.

ONE Wake’s current top priority is affordable housing. Wake County currently has an affordable housing deficit of more than 65,000 units. Not only the lowest income workers, but teachers, nurses, firefighters, and police officers can no longer afford to live in Wake County.

ONE Wake is organizing to build 1000 affordable homes and 1000 affordable rental units in Wake County to create at-scale affordable home ownership opportunities to stop displacement of Black and Brown communities and to build generational wealth. ONE Wake will partner with Nehemiah Housing Development Finance Corporation which has successfully built 6500 affordable homes in New York City, Chicago and Baltimore.

Replicating this success in Wake County will require organizing people and money to identify land and funding sources for a project this large, and to obtain commitments from city and county leaders. To do this, ONE Wake has created the following action teams, for which we need volunteers.

  • Land Research Team – ONE Wake has already proposed to site development at the Randleigh Tract owned by Raleigh and Wake County, but is open to development alternative sites. This team learns as much as possible about the Randleigh site and identifies other potential sites.
  • Municipality Research Team – To become a stronger organization, ONE Wake needs to expand our organizing throughout Wake County. This team identifies municipalities where ONE Wake members live, and will work to expand relationships with leaders in these communities.

  • Bond Referendum Research Team – ONE Wake has proposed a 200-million-dollar bond to Raleigh City Council leaders to assist with building this project. This team will gather data and research bond referenda to work effectively with elected officials to obtain a bond for affordable housing.
  • Campaign Fundraising Team – This team identifies additional funding sources needed to build this project, including plans and strategies for meeting with corporate leaders.
  • Internal Fundraising Research Team – To expand it’s reach, ONE Wake needs to increase its financial resources. This team will reach out to donors, establish reoccurring donor programs and pursue grants.
