What is SoulCollage® and how should I decide which session(s) to sign up for?
SoulCollage® (an “expressive art”) is a process that brings together images, imagination and intuition to help you discover and explore your “inner self.” The SoulCollage® method, created by psychotherapist Seena Frost, M.A., M.Div., is fun and playful. At the same time, it often yields profound insights. No special skill or artistic experience is required. You do not need to “be an artist”! SoulCollage® meets you wherever you are in your life’s journey. Using images from magazines and other sources, you create your very own 5”x 8” SoulCollage® cards and then you use them, via oral and/or written prompts, to gain insight and self-knowledge. All materials are supplied and there is no charge or materials fee for these workshops.
If you are new to SoulCollage®, I recommend that you start with a Making SoulCollage® Cards session. I also recommend that you watch the following (20-minute) video before the session: Catherine Anderson’s video about making a SoulCollage® card (How to Create Your First SoulCollage® Card).
There is also a shorter (6-minute) video by Seena Frost the creator of SoulCollage® (but it doesn’t cover as much about the SoulCollage® process):Seena Frost’s video about SoulCollage®️ and how to make a card (Invitation to SoulCollage®️)
To learn even more about SoulCollage®️ before you sign up, you can take a look at the SoulCollage®️ website.
What to expect: Making SoulCollage® Cards sessions:
These sessions are either two or three hours long and will focus almost entirely on making SoulCollage® cards. We will get into the meditative flow of choosing images (with some lovely background music) and then composing our cards. We will do a very brief introduction of ourselves at the start of the session by quickly choosing a single image, projecting ourselves into that image and then sharing via the image’s voice as we say, “I am one who…” Then we will spend lots of time just looking for images and collaging. [There will be an optional journaling sheet for part of the time for anyone who would like to do this.] Finally, we will close the session by sharing our finished cards with a “gallery walk” and sharing our IAOWs (“I am one who…”s) (which are described in the above videos). If you are attending for the first time I will introduce you to the materials and show you how to use them to make your first card!
What to expect: Communing with our SoulCollage® Cards sessions:
These sessions are one hour long and will focus on interacting with our cards (mostly by completing written prompts and “card games”) and sharing the wisdom we gain with each other. This can include the basic level of having a conversation with our cards and asking them to answer the question: Who are you? We can also pose more specific questions to our cards about issues that have meaning for us such as: How can I deepen my spiritual life? How can I become more playful? How can I manage difficult emotions? We can call on cards from the different SoulCollage® suits: Committee (inner personality parts), Community (beings that impact our personal stories such as family, friends, teachers, ancestors, pets, role models, places), Companion (personal animal totems) and Council (archetypes that are part of the larger story such as the Fool, the Seeker, the Warrior, the Teacher, the Healer, the Lightbearer, etc.). We can even have our cards speak to each other! These sessions are primarily geared to folks who have already made one or more SoulCollage® cards — and you should bring either all of your cards or a good assortment of them with you. However, you are still welcome to attend if you haven’t made an actual SoulCollage® card yet; you can choose to “borrow” some of my cards for the session OR you can make “placeholder” cards: index cards with the name of an entity that you would like to dialogue with, such as “My Inner Critic” or “Mother Earth,” for example.
Some background on SoulCollage® at UUFR and additional information:
Since starting SoulCollage® workshops at UUFR in March of 2024, over 75 unique people ranging in age from under 18 to over 80 have taken part in one or more of the 33 sessions conducted through March 2025! Total attendance over the 13 months was over 150 people, since many people have attended more than one session. I hope you will join us to enjoy SoulCollage® either as a wonderful “one off” experience or, as others have discovered, as an ongoing practice.
In addition to continuing SoulCollage® workshops each month, I hope to eventually add other expressive arts offerings such as Sacred Weaving, Vision Boards, Meditative Coloring, Altered Books and/or Homemade Bookmaking. If you would like to be contacted directly for all such future workshops (both for ongoing SoulCollage® workshops and for any potential other expressive arts workshops), please email me here and ask to be added to my “SoulCollage® and other Expressive Arts Workshops” email list.
